Welcome to Red Hook.
The volume of entries that result from a Google search of Red Hook, Brooklyn belies reality. The majority of information is from a myopic perspective. I believe that the digital divide is almost as evident in Red Hook as it is in a developing nation. My opinion is that “Third World” is a more analogous term to describe the neighborhood in that it suggests a failed Soviet state.
As you are aware, as bounded by Hamilton Avenue the population of Red Hook is about 12,000. (The statistics presented by the Census Tract, the 76th Precinct, and the 11231 Zip Code skew figures to include a population that does not reside in Red Hook.)
Over 9,000 residents live in the Red Hook Houses (public housing a.k.a. The Projects). The median yearly income for an adult in the Red Hook Houses is about $10,000. Fully one third of adults in the Houses are unemployed. Education levels, teen pregnancy and infant mortality rates are equally abysmal.
Much has been written about the style conscious eateries and the design based and artisanal businesses in The Back (centered on Van Brunt Street). If you should eat your way through these businesses you are only going to be exposed to the predominantly white, affluent, college educated perspective that dominates what is posted to the Internet.
For a more realistic perspective I would suggest eating on Van Brunt Street at Mark's Pizzeria and at Ling Gee the Chinese / fried food take out across the street. In the mornings you should stop by A&R Bagels and the Red Hook Coffee shop one block down Van Brunt. On Lorraine Street is Cheng's Chinese take-out and the not to be missed Ray Flaco's Spanish take-out. Where Lorraine meets Wolcott there is the U.S. Fried Chicken and Pizza spot. The other popular food spots are the Fine Fare Supermarket on Lorraine and the C-Town on Mill Street, and of course the bodegas.
Be careful if you choose to venture to the eateries that I mention off of Van Brunt Street. The whites in the Back are small town friendly. The remainder (majority) of the neighborhood is however very insular. People will be well aware, and wary, of your presence. There is a palpable level of racial/class tension here. Tread lightly.
I have no information on statistics of Internet connections in The Projects. I do know that many depend on the four adult terminals available at the Public Library on Wolcott Street. The limited resources of 30 minute sessions can be the source of some aggressive competition.
Two well publicized organizations working to change conditions for the majority in Red Hook are the Community Justice Center on Visitation Street and Added Value on Van Brunt. Less publicized are the Good Shepherd Services Center on Conover Street and the Red Hook Initiative on Clinton Street. Good Shepherd is home to the South Brooklyn Community Academy, a school for students who have dropped out of other High Schools.
