FDA Alert - Vaginal Mesh
On July 13th 2011, the FDA issued a safety communication regarding 'Serious Complications Associated with Transvaginal Placement of Surgical Mesh for Pelvic Organ Prolapse'.
In other words, serious complications have been linked to the use of vaginal mesh or transvaginal mesh. As discussed previously, this vaginal mesh is an implant used to strengthen vaginal tissue that can weaken due to childbirth, hernias, etc. According to the FDA, the purpose of their "serious concerns" are specific to pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
The most common complication that was reported for these vaginal mesh implants was an erosion of the device through the vagina, also known as a protrusion. The vast majority of these reports came between 2008 and 2010.
Some of the most important revelations from the FDAs investigation (taken directly from the FDAs website) are as follows:
-
- Mesh used in transvaginal POP repair introduces risks not present in traditional non-mesh surgery for POP repair.
-
- Mesh placed abdominally for POP repair appears to result in lower rates of mesh complications compared to transvaginal POP surgery with mesh.
-
- There is no evidence that transvaginal repair to support the top of the vagina (apical repair) or the back wall of the vagina (posterior repair) with mesh provides any added benefit compared to traditional surgery without mesh.
-
- While transvaginal surgical repair to correct weakened tissue between the bladder and vagina (anterior repair) with mesh augmentation may provide an anatomic benefit compared to traditional POP repair without mesh, this anatomic benefit may not result in better symptomatic results.
Patients that experienced either mesh erosion or mesh contraction reported severe pelvic pain and/or discomfort.
If you have had a vaginal mesh implant and have suffered from any discomfort, it is important that you contact your physician immediately. There are surgical steps that can be taken to repair this damage and/or reduce the pain or discomfort. If you are interested in legal remedies from such complications, it would be best to speak with a vaginal mesh lawyer.
If you have not had a mesh implant but are considering doing so, please be aware of the alternatives (such as biologic grafts) as well as asking your physician the appropriate questions (recommended by the FDA):

- Are you planning to use mesh in my surgery?
-
- Why do you think I am a good candidate for surgical mesh?
-
- Why is surgical mesh being chosen for my repair?
-
- What are the alternatives to transvaginal surgical mesh repair for POP, including non-surgical options?
-
- What are the pros and cons of using surgical mesh in my particular case? How likely is it that my repair could be successfully performed without using surgical mesh?
-
- Will my partner be able to feel the surgical mesh during sexual intercourse? What if the surgical mesh erodes through my vaginal wall?
-
- If surgical mesh is to be used, how often have you implanted this particular product? What results have your other patients had with this product?
-
- What can I expect to feel after surgery and for how long?
-
- Which specific side effects should I report to you after the surgery?
-
- What if the mesh surgery doesn't correct my problem?
-
- If I develop a complication, will you treat it or will I be referred to a specialist experienced with surgical mesh complications?
-
- If I have a complication related to the surgical mesh, how likely is it that the surgical mesh could be removed and what could be the consequences?
-
- If a surgical mesh is to be used, is there patient information that comes with the product, and can I have a copy?

Who Do You Think Will Stay On The Atlanta Braves?
OK it seems to me like the Braves are going to trade people who came in through 99-00 area, to get new talent. In my opinion, I think people like Chipper Jones (who seems to be the only person from those years who I like) should stay on the Braves, and not just be thrown away. We've traded Smoltz, Furcal, A. Jones, in the past few years, who else are we going to lose? Please give me your opinion on this matter.

Can you tell me about baseball and the Atlanta Braves?
I'm sure this is going to sound dumb, but I know absolutely nothing about baseball. I've never really liked the sport, but my boyfriend is a HUGE Atlanta Braves fan. I'm trying to take an interest in it, but it is Greek to me. Any info, tips, or cool stats I should know would be really helpful. I'm taking him to an Atlanta home game (we're from nor cal) so any other helpful hints would be awesome! Thanks everybody in advance!
The Braves started in Boston.(1871-1952)(Babe Ruth was a player manager for them) They later moved to Milwakee (1953-1965) and then to Atlanta (1966). Eddie Mathews is the only Brave to have played for all three.
The Braves Hank Aaron is the all time home run king. He hit 755. No one has hit more. Turner Field is located at...755 Hank Aaron Drive, Atlanta and opened in 1997.
Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers (The Georgia Peach) was from Georgia. Make sure you check out his statue outside of Turner Field. Cobb was on of the greatest players to have ever played the game.
Inside Turner Field make sure you visit the Braves Museum and Hall of Fame or you can take a tour of the stadium from 9am - 3pm Mon.-Sat. They take you in the club house and dugout.(info. 404-614-2311)
The Braves have retired 5 players #'s and you will see them (the #'s) on the outfield wall...#3 Dale Murphy, #21 Warren Spahn, #35 Phil Niekro, #41 Eddie Mathews and #44 Hank Aaron.

Celebrating YOUth Sports Festival
WHEN CAN I GET MY KIDS INTO SPORTS?
I have four kids aged 2-4 and i was wondering what age you can start playing youth football, soccer, baseball, basketball, and volleyball. I was also wondering if anyone knows when the season for these youth sports start. I have tried looking at my city's parks and rec website and its completely useless.
City Hall will have the phone numbers you need to get in touch with Little Leagues. Also, basketball is in season now. Football season usually starts middle of August and ends around end of Oct or beginning of Nov.
Volleyball is usually a private sport. You sign your kids up for lessons and they eventually practice as a team. For volleyball call the YMCA and usually you can get lessons there year round. For summer outdoor volleyball you can get in touch with Country Clubs nearby.
You can sign your kids up at the YMCA for basketball and swimming, too.

How do people in New York city decorate their place?
Was wondering how they decorate their apartment or condo. What type of wall hangings and figurines do they buy? (I have seen in movies that some have catholic parafanalia on wall, also some have superman like in seinfeld.) I am wanting to make my apartment look like from new york city.
Ummmm...this isn't a cult. People who live here all have different ideas about decorating their places.
I, for one, would not have Catholic paraphernalia because...well...for one...I'm Jewish.
And these days, I mostly decorate in kid related mess, since I have two children. Oh, also our decorating style runs towards the "Early Book" style since I'm a teacher and my husband is a professor. (We have bookshelves all over the house, and there are books on almost every surface. Newspapers, too.)
But everyone is very different here. There is no one design aesthetic. You have been watching wayyyyy too much TV!

Traveling to New York City for the first time with my family?
We're gonna be landing in LaGuardia. Any tips or things we should know before going to New York City? Things that we should avoid doing or places we should avoid going to? Recommended things to do? Is it safe to take my Nikon camera and have it hanging around my neck? Best ways to get around? Etc. We're going for 8-9 days and we have no idea where to go or what to do. Thank you!
